Lafayette Area
Lafayette, Louisiana mixes all the amenities of urban life, including universities and medical centers, with the unmistakable influence of the region’s venerable Acadian and Creole cultures. Visitors can find out about the roots of the area by touring Vermilionville (built as 19th century bayou village functioning as an interactive museum) or the National Park Service’s Acadian Cultural Center. Our heritage is well preserved, and both these wonderful venues highlight our rich Cajun and Creole cultural traditions.
Lafayette is said to have more restaurants per capita than any other American city, and many of them concentrate on the traditional cuisine. Music nightclubs are numerous in the area, featuring homegrown talent, including both traditional and contemporary Acadian and Zydeco performers. Festival International de Louisiane in October, two festivals, draw thousands of visitors and also anchor a calendar year filled with parties of the vibrant culture of the area.
The Acadian Cultural Center at Lafayette tells tales of their origins, migration, settlement, and modern culture of the Acadians (Cajuns) along with other area groups. Ranger programs, movies, displays, and events talk about many different local customs such as songs, story-telling, dancing, and food, and explore the mysteries of the Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana’s strangest location. Mobile media players together with guided tours of the memorial in French, Spanish, and English can be borrowed in the visitor center information desk.
The center’s museum shop sells local crafts, songs, and books, such as cookbooks and children’s stories. Admission to the center is completely free.
